The “Join, or Die” cartoon was first published by Benjamin Franklin in his Pennsylvania Gazette on May 9, 1754. Its premise was that the American colonies were in competition with each other, and that the only way to defeat the marauding French and their Indian allies during the French and Indian War was to join together.
