The alternative currencies listed below are all backed by precious metals, rather than the government debt that backs (if you can call it that) the vast majority of the world’s currencies. The electronic currency systems are organized to allow you to easily “spend” your account balance by transferring part of it to another account holder in the system in exchange for goods or services. Alternatively, you have the option to redeem your balance into U.S. dollars or other mainstream currencies for a fee. Account checking and transactions are done over the web, using your browser. None of the services listed charges anything to set up an account. (Some do charge maintenance fees.)
